Jämsän Saunakylä Sauna Village
Saunakylä at Juokslahti in Jämsä is a living village of more than twenty historic smoke saunas on Lake Päijänne, heated by volunteers every week in summer.
Saunakylä is a smoke sauna village in the literal sense: more than twenty smoke saunas built between the 1700s and the 1940s in different regions of Finland, taken apart, moved and rebuilt on a wooded shore of Päijänne at Juokslahti, and used rather than displayed. The idea belongs to architect Risto Vuolle-Apiala, who documented vanishing smoke saunas from the 1970s and founded the original village at Muurame in the early 1980s. When Muurame's village closed in 2010 and the saunas began to rot, a group of Jämsä sauna enthusiasts founded the Finnish Sauna Culture Association to rescue them; Muurame donated the saunas in 2015 and they were moved here.
