Valamo is the Orthodox monastery of Finland, re-founded at Heinävesi after its brotherhood left Lake Ladoga during the Winter War, and it takes guests all year in rooms deliberately kept without televisions or radios. The sauna is part of monastery life, not a spa add-on. In summer the favourite is the wood-fired shore sauna on Juojärvi, a continuously heated room for seven or eight with a fireplace room, a big cooling terrace and a stone path down to a sandy swimming beach, set apart from the monastery so that only the water route passes it. The monks are keen bathers, and the sauna is in their own use as well as the guests'.
