Rajaportin sauna

Rajaportin sauna in Pispala, Tampere, has run since 1906 and is Finland's oldest public sauna in use, wood-fired with a massive stove and separate departments.

Rajaportti opened in 1906 when Hermanni and Maria Lahtinen ran a bakery, a food store and a sauna on their block in Pispala, the workers' district on the ridge above Tampere, and the stone sauna building of 1915 is still the one you bathe in. It is the oldest public sauna in Finland still in use, and it has changed so little that the only alteration worth mentioning is a wall put up in the 1930s to separate the women's washroom from the men's. The block belongs to the city, and since 1989 the Pispala Sauna Association has run it, adding a sauna café and a masseur around the turn of the millennium and celebrating the sauna's 120th year in 2026.
