A Sauna Deep Inside a Swedish Mine
At Adventuremine, the sauna starts with a helmet and a descent into the mountain. Inside: a lake, warm timber benches and the Lady of the Mine ritual.
The first thing to put on for a sauna at Adventuremine is a helmet. A headlamp comes next. The swimwear can wait: there is a walk through a Swedish iron-ore mine between the surface and the sauna bench.
In Tuna Hästberg, in Sweden's Dalarna region, a timber sauna sits beside an underground lake. Its windows look out at rock and water. The light from the room picks out a wooden platform beneath the stone, and ladders lead down into the lake.
This is the setting for the Lady of the Mine sauna ritual, a guided visit built around heat, cold water, music and the old stories of the mountain.
The walk is part of the sauna
Guides take guests down the personnel-shaft stairs and through tunnels and chambers. Adventuremine allows about 45 minutes for the descent, two hours for the ritual and another 45 minutes to come back up: roughly three and a half hours altogether.
Founder Daniel Karlsson puts the sauna about a third of a mile into the mountain and roughly 280 feet below the surface. The public tour description uses a rounded depth of about 260 feet. The practical point is the journey: you reach this sauna on foot, with the guides.
"The journey, the darkness, the stillness and the contrast between heat and cold make it much more than a conventional sauna visit," Karlsson told our sister publication SaunaNews in an October 15 email interview.
A joke that became a place
The idea began as a joke between two people working in the mine. Karlsson and Stefan Olsson went on to design and build the sauna, opening it in October 2022.
They used timber from their own forest and carried most of the building materials underground on their shoulders. The windows took a team of 12, with six people carrying at a time and the others taking turns. The room's view was hard-earned.
That view gives the sauna its particular character. On the bench side of the glass there is wood, warm light and a place to sit. Beyond it, the rock drops into the lake. The supplied photographs show both together, with the windows holding the water almost level with the benches.
Meet the Lady of the Mine
The ritual takes its name from the mythical guardian said to watch over miners. Adventuremine developed it with Nordic Sauna Stories, and Karlsson says the venue now has a team of seven sauna ritual masters.
The sessions combine storytelling, music and Aufguss with several sauna rounds and dips in water at about 39°F. A speaker system, including a subwoofer inside the sauna, gives the guides another way to shape the session.
The heater is a Saunum Luxury. Its air-blending system brings hotter air from high in the room together with cooler air lower down. Karlsson says this allows guests to use the whole sauna, rather than concentrating on the upper benches. The ritual master can switch the fan on and off from inside the room.
There is food between the underground journey and the return to daylight: cheese and charcuterie from MurboAnnas, a local producer, and a locally made non-alcoholic drink.
Asked what stays with guests, Karlsson described the sauna as a place where people can let their guard down. "In the sauna, everyone is equal," he said.
Plan for the mine as well as the heat
The mine stays around 39°F year-round. Pack warm layers, sturdy walking shoes, gloves, swimwear and a towel in a small backpack. Gloves are required. Bathing shoes are useful on the cold platform.
Open tours accommodate up to 14 guests; private groups can have up to 18 by arrangement. Tours are offered in Swedish and English. The operator requires normal fitness and mobility, sets a weight limit of about 265 pounds and requires a guardian for visitors under 15. Discuss access needs with Adventuremine before booking.
Changing space is simple: guests can change under a towel, with a small private space behind the sauna for two or three people. Check current dates and participation terms on Adventuremine's sauna ritual page .

Allow time for the climb back out when planning the rest of your day. The walk back is part of the booked visit.
